A
chignon (French word) is a popular hair style.
Chignon
has been popular since the ancient Athens. This hairstyle was worn by women and men.
The women secured the style using pins
fashioned from bone or wood, men of Athens fastened theirs with golden pins
formed into grasshopper shapes.
The style gained recognition again during the
Victorian era, when women tried to outdo one another with enormously padded
buns with the use of feathers or birds as accessories.
Another widespread
trend of wearing the up-do was during World War II; women working in factories
found it a practical style to keep their hair up for comfort and concentration.
The French
word ‘CHIGNON’ (is pronounced shee-nyon) means a bun at the nape of the neck.

2 Primary reasons why chignon is worn
- The style provides an ultra-feminine, romantic arrangement that flatters any woman's face. It is not a flashy style, which is important when wearing an intricate dress such as a wedding gown or other formal dress.
- Secondly, chignon is simple and much more practical to achieve, allowing women to easily put their hair up (getting your hair out of the way) for comfort
A chignon can be created with all of a woman’s hair for a sleek sophisticated look
This is suitable for bridal hairstyles, red carpet, and dinner/cocktail
parties.
A chignon can be looser, allowing the wavy curls show, whilst the bun is
supported with curls.
This is suitable for red carpet, office look and cocktail parties too.

Another way chignon can be achieved is: using a thick
braid or several small braids twisted into a bun. The buns can be placed
to the right or left of the nape of the neck, and flowers or other
embellishments can be tucked into the bun for added flair.
Make sure your hair is long enough to pull into a ponytail, with some
hair left at the bottom of the pony tail. Curl the hair at the bottom and tuck
the ends of each curl into the hair with hair pins to create a bun. At the end,
spray with holding spray to create a professional finish making sure the bun
stays the same throughout the day.
